The Orchard is a community project and local residents of all ages are invited to join in and take part in the activities. You can come along and enjoy the social activities such as the Apple Day in October, or the Wassail in January and we welcome volunteers to help out with the work of planting new trees and maintaining the existing ones and organizing and running the social events. If you think you can help with any of these please become a Friend so that we can keep you up-to-date with the activities that are taking place.
We will be planting more trees in the Memorial Playing Field and other areas. There is a programme of maintenance work on the trees, new and old, and the surrounding area. If you think you can help, please check the Newsletter which gives details of dates, activities and locations.
We want to encourage people to look after their own fruit trees, and to use and share the fruit. If you have fruit trees of your own, why not come on one of our pruning courses to learn how to manage them?
The Apple Day is an annual celebration and it takes a lot of organizing to make it happen. We use it to inform people about our activities, raise funds and have a good time. It is all done by volunteers. We need people to help set up on the day, run the booths, give out information, make tea and coffee and sell refreshments. We invite people to bring apples to press to make juice. This is hard work and we need people to come and help our hard-pressed team (sorry about that!). Could you spare an hour on the day?
We have been very fortunate in the financial help we have had from very generous donors including charities and individuals who have sponsored trees, but we have also raised funds by selling refreshments, fruit and juice on Apple Day. Do you have any surplus fruit you could bring along to sell or to make juice which could be sold on Apple Day? Do you have a favourite apple-based cake or other recipe that you could make to sell on our refreshment stall? Do you make jam, pickles or preserves and would you be willing to bring along a few jars for us to sell?
